Home insurance at Top of Christmas List
While consumers parade around the high street searching for the latest gifts this Christmas, there is one essential they should not overlook - home insurance. Research suggests this Christmas will be as expensive as ever which is why comprehensive home insurance cover is vital.
We may be in the midst of a global economic crisis but there are no signs of shoppers holding back on their Christmas spending this year. According to research by a leading home insurance provider, nearly a fifth of UK adults (16 per cent) believe they will spend more on Christmas presents this year while more than half (58 per cent) are expecting to stick to roughly the same amount. The tradition of giving Christmas presents and ensuring our loved ones get exactly what they want shows no signs of dying off. While we may be shopping a little more smartly with our money this time around to scoop bargains, the high street and the online shopping market are still likely to be buzzing. However, there is one gift that savvy shoppers should not forget to buy for themselves over the festive season – and that is a comprehensive home insurance policy. Why home insurance is so important at Christmas Winter brings with it added risks to homeowners as the dark nights present a blanket of cover for opportunist thieves. Indeed at Christmas time, burglars know that homes are typically filled with added goodies and so are more likely to strike. This year that situation may be magnified by the fact that we are enduring a global economic crisis. As reported by Abbey, historically a financial crisis is accompanied by an upsurge in crime rates as more people look to cut corners even if it is in an illegal manner. With no signs that our Christmas spending is slumping it’s crucial that property owners ensure their home insurance is not just in place but completely up to date. This may mean making policy adjustments as you buy expensive items over the Christmas period. Fortunately there are now several home insurance companies that automatically increase cover over the festivities – usually by five-15 per cent. However, you should check to ensure the level of additional cover you receive is sufficient and also check the dates that you receive this bonus coverage for. According to the survey, a fifth of consumers buy their Christmas presents early to spread the cost – but most additional coverage will only be in place through the month of December. Another alternative is to pick up a policy with unlimited contents cover – then you never need to waste time adjusting your policy. However, the premiums for unlimited cover are likely to be high and this may not be the best financial option in the current climate. How can you avoid home insurance claims at Christmas? While home insurance should always be in place to protect you in case the worst happens, in an ideal world that scenario will not occur. Take steps to protect your home by ensuring all Christmas valuables are kept out of sight. For example, if you have a Christmas tree that is clearly visible from the street this isn’t a smart place to store your presents too – keep them locked away in a cupboard until it’s time to exchange gifts. Keep any valuables out of sight and dispose of any empty boxes in a subtle manner so as not to draw attention to the exciting new goodies you have inside the home. Think about overall home security too. If you leave the house for a night of celebrations, ensure you lock the windows and doors before leaving and switch on the burglar alarm. Remember that while home insurers will offer you discounts for using a burglar alarm they could also invalidate a claim if you fail to use it or any other security measure you are claiming a discount for. Consider installing time-switch lights that make it appear as though you’re home even when you’re not. If these aren’t available then at least leave a light on and turn the radio up when you’re not at home. However, it’s not just thefts and burglaries that homeowners must protect themselves from over the festivities. December traditionally brings with it some severe weather conditions, including flash floods. Taking steps to lessen the risk of damage, particularly if you live in a flood-risk area is a smart move. For example, homeowners could raise plug sockets further up the walls to reduce electrical damage. Move any valuable and sentimental items upstairs where they are less likely to be affected. Also consider installing flood defense mechanisms and stocking up on sandbags as the first inch of water seeping into a home causes the majority of damage.

Homelowprice Part Tips on Selecting and Creating a Home Theater

Tips on Selecting and Creating a Home Theater
There are various rooms in the home which many state to be their favorite one. One such room is often the home theater. This is the perfect area for the whole family to enjoy. For those who do not yet have a home theater in their residence and wish to set one up, the following will provide some useful tips for selecting the proper electronic equipment and furnishings as well as how to set up the whole room so that the finished product is a spectacular one.
Choose a Room or Space in Which the Home Theater Will Be Located
Before heading out to the store to buy electronic equipment or furnishings for the home theater it is important to select the space in which the home theater will be located. It is most advantageous if there is a completely separate room which will accommodate the home theater alone. However, for those who have limited space and would like to make a portion of their family room into a home theater this too may be accomplished. After selecting the appropriate room or space for the home theater, take down measurements to determine how much space you have to work with.
Determine What Items Are Desired and Where They Will Be Placed
The next step in the establishment of a home theater is to decide what items you want your home theater to have and where they will go in the room. Some necessary items will include a state of the art television, DVD player, DVDs, television stand or wall mount, speakers and proper seating. Additional items may include a surround sound system, new lighting, wall decorations and tables. Once you have determined what type of home theater items you want in the room, make a sketch of the room and take note of what items will go where within the room.
Consider Soundproofing the Room
For those who wish to go all out with regard to their home theater, soundproofing the room may be an option. However, this can be a more in depth task therefore only those who are capable of completing a job of this magnitude should attempt it as it often involves a larger type of home improvement project. For those who may not have the expertise but can afford to do so, you can always hire someone to soundproof the room for you. Just keep in mind that it is not necessary to soundproof the room in order to have a great home theater as soundproofing is simply an additional nicety which some may desire.
Shopping for Your Home Theater Equipment and Furnishings
It is now time to purchase the items for the home theater. For the electronic equipment, it is often best to shop at electronics stores, either at their physical locations or online, as these types of stores will usually yield the largest variety of products. Determine what your budget is with regard to equipment and choose items which will go perfectly within your new home theater. Try shopping sales and consider purchasing items online as web-only specials are frequently offered via this route. If buying equipment online just be sure to inquire about free shipping and insurance protection options as the equipment is fragile which requires careful shipping.
As for the furniture which will go in your new home theater, purchasing items such as recliners, side tables and wall decorations will all make your home theater comfortable and give it a homey feel. Determine what look you are going for with regard to the overall feel of the room and choose furnishings which will accomplish this goal.
Furnish the Room
The final step is to set everything up within your new home theater. Take out your sketch of where you wanted to place the items within the room and get started on setting everything up. This should be the easy part as you have already determined where you would like things to go and you have the necessary items in which to furnish your new home theater.

Decorating A Travel Inspired Home
When you take a vacation to somewhere unknown, exotic or simply different from where you live your daily life, there are a ton of adventures waiting to transpire. Maybe you enjoy seeing the architecture, tasting new foods, or hearing a different language. Maybe you just like the feel of a different culture or the experience of music and entertainment that is completely different from your own. No matter what your reasons for loving to travel, it’s a safe bet that you have some special way of remembering your adventures. Journaling, pictures, mementos, and purchases all have a way of bringing you back to a special vacation. Once you’ve decided to use the inspiration of your travels in decorating your home, you’ll have a plethora of fun decisions to make. In fact, just knowing that your travel purchases will be on display is bound to impact what you do buy on your vacations. Here are a few pointers on creating a travel inspired home. 1. Find inspiration. You may choose a theme for your entire home, or you may choose to have each room represent its own. You can also just go eclectic and have a color related theme or something less concrete. The reason for taking this on one room at a time is that you can choose a focal point and go from there. Maybe you brought home an amazing Oriental rug that will set the theme for your dining room. Or maybe you’ll purchase an Adirondack chair to create a beach house room that reminds you of Nantucket. Whatever your focus, it will help you make the rest of your decisions without getting overwhelmed. 2. Cluster. If you have a fondness for buying a lot of small items, find a way to display them as a set, or rotate them on a display case. You may have more wooden carvings than you have room to display them. However, you can get away with displaying more of them if you arrange them as a special set on a shelf. 3. A use for everything. Try using some of your purchases for practical, but unexpected purposes. Maybe the wine bottles from your Paris trip can be filled with sand and used as bookends. Rugs can be hung as wall design, and that gorgeous Indian fabric can double as a table cloth. The limit is your imagination. Some of your design choices may be purchases you made on vacation. Others like the Adirondack chair, some beach-like blinds or Asian inspired dividers might be inspired by your trip and the practicality of transporting goods overseas. The real fun of taking this approach to designing your space is that you’re never really done with it. Travelers see the world differently way from those content to stay on their front porches all their lives. Their front porches tend to reflect that. Let your space reflect your sense of adventure and be a reminder of the adventures you’ve had so far, and the ones yet to come.
